Understanding the Root Chakra

Ann Meyer

The root chakra is associated with the earth element and provides us with a stable foundation for our spiritual journey to unfold.

On the journey of self-discovery and spirituality, we often come across working with the chakras. The chakras signify seven energetic points within our body that help us navigate our inner workings and lead to a form of enlightenment. When working with the chakras, typically the starting point is located at the base of the spine and is known as the "root chakra". Always portrayed as a red hue, it symbolizes stability, security, and connection to the physical world.

The root chakra is associated with the earth element and provides us with a stable foundation for our spiritual journey to unfold. Just as a tree requires strong roots to stand tall, cultivating a healthy root chakra empowers us to navigate life's challenges with resilience, courage, and an unwavering sense of stability. By tending to this foundational energy, we create balance and harmony between the inner and outer realms. Inviting us to dig deep and construct a powerful core, the root chakra provides us with a sense of comfort throughout the unknown.

Working alongside the root chakra we acknowledge and address any imbalances in our lives that may be hindering our sense of security. This can include aspects of our relationships, physical and mental health, financial stability, or home life. When our root chakra is aligned, we feel safe and secure within these realms, allowing us to focus on other aspects of our being. By grounding into the earth, we face life's challenges with bravery and vigor.

When our root chakra is unbalanced, it can manifest in various ways including impacted emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Feelings of insecurity, instability, and lack of grounding are common indicators that this energetic point needs healing.

Plants that correspond to the root chakra are fragrant in earthy notes, adaptogens, and roots which encourage longevity. Often associated with the earth element, evergreen needles and resins help to encourage a sense of grounding and comfort. Some flowers with multiple petals in dark pink or red hues can be considered root chakra plants, too.
