This Indian culinary herb is also widely celebrated for its medicinal properties. Its strong anti-inflammatory action and its ability to increase peripheral circulation make it a valuable herb for skin disorders, arthritis, chronic pain, and more. It is a warming, bitter, slightly stimulating herb with an affinity for the liver, gallbladder, and digestive tract. It stimulates the production of digestive bile, purifies the blood, and cleanses and protects the liver. It is also antimicrobial, and can be used in combination with probiotics to balance intestinal flora. In Ayurveda it is considered an excellent cleansing herb that clears toxins, warms the blood and balances metabolism. It is also stimulating to the uterus, helping to move stagnation and clear congealed blood.
