Salvia officinalis

Sage is cooling, cleansing, and awakening. It can be useful for hormonal changes related to shifting estrogen balance, including menopause symptoms. It helps the body regulate its fluids, making it a go-to herb for excessive sweating or discharge, or for dryness of the mucous membranes. Sage can help dry up breast milk in cases of excessive lactation; it is not recommended for those who need to maintain or increase their milk production. Sage also works well for sharpening memory and quickening the senses. As a culinary seasoning, it is not only flavorful, but good for fat digestion and expelling gas. Sage can be used as a gargle or mouth rinse for calming inflamed or irritated tissues, whitening teeth, soothing sore throats, and promoting healing after oral surgery. It is also helpful for sinusitis and postnasal drip, and the well-strained tea may be added to a sinus rinse. As a hair rinse, it can help to deepen the tone of dark hair, strengthen the hair and encourage growth, and reduce fungal dandruff.

*Medicinal doses of sage may not be safe for pregnancy. Check for other contraindications as well.*
