Piñon pines, also called nut pines, grow in elevations around 5,000 feet. They have a long history of use by Indigenous cultures, and are particularly well-known for their role in the medicine and spiritual practices of the Navajo people. When burned as incense, the resin and leaves have a sweet, warming pine smell.  The resin is traditionally used in salves to help heal cuts and to draw out foreign objects such as splinters.
