Bursera graveolens

The name “palo santo” translates literally to “holy wood.” This mystical tree grows on the coast of South America, where indigenous people have used it ritually for thousands of years. Like white sage, palo santo is burned for spiritual cleansing, purification, and protection.  It belongs to the citrus family, and is related to frankincense, myrrh and copal. Its smoke has a distinctive sweet smell.  In aromatherapy, palo santo essential oil is used to lift the spirits and calm the nervous system.
