As indicated by its scientific name leonurus cardiaca, motherwort is a cardiac tonic. It is great for helping to restore blood vessels to the heart, lowering blood pressure, strengthening electrical activity in the heart, and easing heart palpitations due to tension and anxiety. Motherwort is used for calming heart, mind, and body. It also makes a great uterine tonic. It can be used to alleviate acute menstrual cramps, and if taken for a few months as a tonic, it may significantly reduce or alleviate them. It is great for soothing the mind and body during menopause. Motherwort can also be helpful for those with pain from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. Because it acts on both the uterine system and the heart, motherwort is an excellent healing herb for those who have suffered emotional trauma related to the uterus or to sexuality. Due to its bitterness and its calming and antispasmodic action, it may be useful for nervous constipation, or constipation related to shifts in one’s routine.
*Those with endometriosis or fibroids should not use motherwort regularly. This may not be a complete list of all possible contraindications*
