Ginkgo improves circulation throughout the body by increasing the tone and elasticity of the blood vessels. It is especially prized for its ability to improve cognitive function by increasing cerebral blood flow. Ginkgo is one of the few herbs that has been subject to fairly extensive scientific research. These studies have shown ginkgo extracts to improve brain cell function and message transmission speed. Alzheimer’s sufferers have shown clinical improvement while taking ginkgo extract. Gingko may also be of use in many other cognitive conditions, such as ADHD, short-term memory loss, and brain injury. Because ginkgo increases blood flow to the body’s periphery, including the ears, eyes, and extremities, it is potentially useful for tinnitus, dizziness, eye health, Reynaud’s syndrome, and any other condition caused or compounded by poor circulation.
*Be sure to discontinue ginkgo several weeks prior to surgery, and do not take it with blood thinners or if you have a disease that impedes blood clotting. Like many herbs, ginkgo may be incompatible with pharmaceuticals, including psychiatric drugs. This may not be a complete list of all possible contraindications.*
THS recommends that you consult with a qualified healthcare professional before using herbal products, particularly if you take other medications, or if you are nursing, pregnant, or expecting to become pregnant.
