Angelica sinesis

In traditional Chinese medicine, Dong quai is known as dang gui and used to replenish and activate the blood, regulate menstruation, and to lubricate the intestines. It is the foremost Chinese herbal tonic for estrogen and for the uterine system; taken throughout the month but stopped during active menstruation, it may help balance irregular, painful, congested or excessive periods.  Dong quai is often included in blends to balance hormones after coming off hormonal birth control (often with vitex) or to maintain healthy estrogen levels and reduce hormonal symptoms during menopause. It is a common ingredient for cold stagnant conditions with blood stagnation or deficiency, such as sallow face, dizziness, palpitations, stubborn pain, traumatic injuries, constipation, carbuncles and sores.

*Dong quai may interfere with hormonal birth control. Because of its stimulating effect on the uterus it should not be used in pregnancy. This may not be a full list of all contraindications.*
