Chickweed contains saponins that help to increase the permeability of cell membranes, thus increasing absorption of nutrients (especially minerals). Chickweed is cooling and soothing to hot inflamed tissues. This combined with its saponin content make it a stellar herb for gently dissolving and breaking down unwanted matter, such as thick mucous, growths and cysts, bacteria, and unwanted fat cells. It is cooling and soothing in cases of inflammation and heat in the urinary tract system. Chickweed is also high in many vitamins and minerals, and can be eaten fresh as a salad green.
