Betula lenta

Birch bark is used internally and externally as an emollient for hardened, dry, mineralized tissues. The bark is high in potassium, helping the body to retain water. It is useful for acne, eczema, psoriasis, cuts, and burns. Birch bark also makes wonderful hair rinses for thin lifeless hair or dry flaky scalps. In conditions of extreme dryness, it is best blended with demulcents such as licorice, slippery elm, marshmallow root, or oatmeal, and used in conjunction with healthy, nourishing fats (internally, oils such as fish, avocado, or flax oil; externally, any oil or moisturizer appropriate for the skin type).  Birch is also often included in blends for chronic pain associated with stagnant energy and inflammation, such as fibromyalgia, fever aches, and rheumatism. Birch-infused oil can be applied topically to strains, sprains, and stiff, achy muscles and joints.
