Benzoin resin, known in traditional Chinese medicine as an xi xiang, is prized as a topical antiseptic and astringent. External applications are useful for small cuts, abrasions, chapped skin, enlarged pores, shingles sores, ringworm, and other skin ailments. Benzoin is taken internally as an expectorant and for stomach cramps. It makes a wonderful steam for colds, flu, and asthma, helping to break up congestion and relieve sore throats.
