The Maya believe cacao has divine origins and psychoactive properties, and have long used it in ritual and ceremony. Research suggests that chocolate can relieve stress, improve cognitive function, and contribute to cardiovascular health. Medicinally, it has been used to alleviate fever, anemia, poor appetite, and mental fatigue, to increase milk production and to dissolve kidney stones. It is also considered an excellent aphrodisiac.
