Achillea millefolium

Yarrow is known as "ruler of the blood," and is a great remedy for wounds, bruises, sprains, and bleeding, as well as for purifying and moving the blood. It is a cooling herb, rich in volatile oils. Served as a hot tea, yarrow makes a first-rate diaphoretic, helping to bring on a cleansing sweat and to reduce fevers. Some parents bathe their children with yarrow infusion to help break their fevers during colds and flus. Yarrow also boasts antispasmodic properties, which allow it to relieve stomach cramps and uterine tension. Yarrow can stimulate delayed or absent menstrual cycles and can relieve cramps and heavy bleeding. The bitter taste stimulates digestion and helps the body clear mucus from the digestive tract. Yarrow’s anti-inflammatory, tissue-tightening properties make it a good herb for toning the blood vessels. Finally, yarrow makes an effective anti-inflammatory and diuretic in cases of urinary tract infections and cystitis.

*Because of yarrow’s stimulating action on the uterine muscles, it should be avoided during pregnancy*
