As I grow with my connection to the Elements my understanding broadens and my consciousness shifts. I continually am amazed at the different ways that learning and listening, watching and observing nature is one of the biggest ways that we learn to reconnect to ourselves, our communities and what is vitally important to opening our eyes and becoming aware.

Air. What is Air? In the physical sense air can reshape the land with its strength, it transports seeds all over the world and can move earth faster than any other element. Its sheer power in strength alone has been harnessed as a tool for many years. Man has used it to move boats across oceans and planes across sky’s, animals use it for catching scents off their prey and plants use it for transportation and abundance in reproduction, many cultures ancient and present time watch it to understand weather, all by studying its direction.

In Astrology each sign is related to an element. East is the direction associated with Air. We have three zodiac signs of each element. Representing air is Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Air signs are all about motion, ideas and setting things into action. They are known as the genius of the zodiac, the movers and the shakers and also the acute problem solver. Folks that have air as their sign often are seen as catching the wind and taking of flying.

Animals that are represented with air are birds of flight, bees, and bugs that fly. Animal medicine has been used for centuries with our ancestors as tools for guidance. Watching and learning from animals that have lived this earth long before man ever did. Their wisdom is so profound, their natural instincts are genuinely passed on to us as a lesson. How we learn from them is by observing their message by their natural actions. In the Medicine Cards, written by Jamie Sams & David Carson, it goes into old fables and tales of these animals that have been observed from ancient cultures all over the world. I have found this set of oracle cards to be an excellent tool for guidance and understanding. A few of the animals of Air that have encouraged me on my path are:

-The Eagle, Spirit, helps us to connect to the divine spirit. Eagle reminds us to take heart and gather courage, for the universe is presenting you with an opportunity to soar above the mundane levels of life. –Animal medicine

-The Hawk, Messenger, Hawk medicine teaches you to be observant. What Hawk brings to you is the intuitive ability to discern the message carried with the cry of Hawk. The shrillness of Hawk’s call pierces the state of awareness, and asks us to seek truth. -Animal Medicine

-Butterfly, Transformation, The power of Butterfly brings to us the mind, and the ability to know the mind or to change the mind. It is the art of transformation. It asks you to observe your position in the transformation. -Animal Medicine

-Bee, The Guide, The bee symbolizes community, brightness and personal power. Follow the bee to discover your new destination. The bee is the messenger bringing the secrets of life and service. –pure-spirit

-Raven, Magic, Raven is the messenger of the void. Raven guides the magic of healing and the change in consciousness that will bring about a new reality and dispel “dis-ease” or illness. It is the power of the unknown at work, and something special is about to happen. -Animal Medicine

-Owl, Deception, Owl medicine is symbolically associated with clairvoyance, astral projections, and magic. Owl in many cultures is a symbol for wisdom, because the owl can see that which others cannot. The seer in the darkness. -Animal Medicine

There are many other animals that are totems of the wind. If you feel one calling you watch it and learn. It may be sending you a message or guidance tool.

In the body, what is Air? Our lungs and filtration systems that create movement, our circulatory systems that keep us warm and all parts moving. Air can be helpful in healing and also harmful in the body depending on what is going on. The automatic power of our lungs to continually breath in and out is Air. It is vital to our lively hood that the lungs involuntarily work. When we have stagnated breathing or lung congestion the air can help dry and move these out. Air is known as our Qi or life force. In Chinese medicine, wind is known as one of the 6 elements that cause disease. It is believed that the wind can enter the body through different meridians and bring disease if the body is weak and deplete our Qi. There are many plants that can be ally’s in helping your airflow. If you are having lung congested for example, check out Mullein or Yerba Santa as a friend in helping restore vitality to the lungs.

In a metaphysical sense, air can send you messages from your guides and ancestor’s. You can use it as a tool by: burning incense, doing breathing exercises and yoga to release and bring in things that no longer serve you. Wind brings change. When you are in search or in need of change call in the elements and tools of Air.

In sharing my connection to wind, I hope that you find guidance with your own path on reconnecting with nature and yourself. May it be a tool that guides you when you are unsure. May you always know that your intuition and connections to spirit are by your side always.
