Herb of the Month: Rosemary

Herb of the Month: Rosemary

Shannon Trubatch

For those of us that reside in the Pacific Northwest, Rosemary is a common sight amongst neighborhood gardens, and is one of the few herbs we're lucky to be able to harvest all throughout the year. RosemaryRosemarinus officinalis, is an evergreen shrub with fragrant, needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple, or blue flowers. A member of the mint family Lamiaceae, which includes over 7,000 species, Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean region. The name "rosemary" derives from the Latin words "ros", meaning "dew" and "marinus," meaning "sea" - "dew of the sea." In Greek mythology, it's said to have been draped around the Greek goddess Aphrodite when she rose from the sea.

Rosemary has a long history of culinary and medicinal uses, dating back to at least 500 B.C. Rosemary is frequently used as a seasoning in a variety of dishes, such as soups, casseroles, salads, and stews. My personal favorite is Rosemary and Garlic infused olive oil.

And yet, Rosemary is much more than just a tasty culinary seasoning! It has long been used for increasing memory and cognitive function. Blended with other brain-boosting herbs, such as Gotu Kola or Ginkgo, it makes a great tea to sip while studying or working. It is used in dream pillows or medicine blends geared to promote lucid dreaming and dream recall. Rosemary is also helpful for relaxing smooth muscles, reducing inflammation, regulating blood pressure, clearing stagnant energy, and fighting bacteria. It is a wonderful herb for treating respiratory complaints, congestion and coughs. The essential oil can be included in massage oils and rubs for tight, sore muscles. Diluted in a carrier oil, it may also be applied to the soles of the feet or chest during viruses and respiratory complaints, to the temples for headaches, or near the adrenal glands for fatigue and sluggishness.
